Notes on learning, and slowly unlearning

A beginner's guide to a very old path

A teacher once said the beginner's mind has many possibilities, the expert's has few. I started this three years into practice — still very much a beginner — writing down what I'm learning as I go.

Where to begin

Six ideas that hold the rest of the path together.

01

The Four Noble Truths

Suffering is real, it has a cause, it can end, and there's a path that leads there.

02

The Eightfold Path

Right view, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, concentration.

03

Impermanence

Nothing holds still. Learning to loosen your grip is most of the work.

04

Non-self

The self we defend so fiercely may be more process than thing.

05

Mindfulness of Breath

The oldest instruction: sit down, and pay attention to one breath.

06

Loving-kindness

A practice for turning goodwill outward — starting with yourself.

The Journey

An ongoing, unfinished practice

"Three years ago I couldn't sit still for five minutes. I started this page mostly to keep myself honest — writing down what I actually notice, not what I think I'm supposed to notice."
